Artist's Comments

I discovered in nature
the nonutilitarian delights
that I sought in art.
Both were a form of magic,
both were a game
of intricate enchantment
and deception."
-- V. Sirin

The Viceroy is often mistaken for a Monarch
but once you're familiar with the patterns
you'll notice the extra black bands
and the shapes of the windows.

:) just a fun fact for you:

The viceroy is a smart adaptive mimic of the monarch because the monarch caterpillar and butterfly are poisonous. The caterpillar feeds on the milkweed plant and absorbs the poisonous sap which is passed on to the adult through the pupal stage. The result is that most birds find the butterflies distasteful and leave them alone.

Through evolution the viceroy butterfly is using what is called Protective Coloration, and the kind of mimic it does is called Müllerian mimicry, which kind of makes you wonder what it may have looked like before it changed its outift.

And of course a viceroy is a ruling governor
is the stead of the sovereign
acting as an aid to the monarch(y). ;)

:iconlittleredelf:
good macro lens . . .
and also, when these creatures
are feeding on butterfly milkweed
they stay quite still.
while i was taking the photo
one landed on my camera
another on my sleeve,
while yet another brushed past my arm
to get to the treat it desired
just beyond
:icontootz:
oh wow another beauty! Great shot!
:iconakbandit:
It makes me sad to think when I was still a youngin, I didnt know about their delicate wings, until my father told me after my first few captures at that point capture of these beautiful creatures was not an option partly because if my father found out he would kick my butt:fork: but I will never forget what he said to me when he saw me kill a spider for the first time "What did that creature ever do to you boy? you never kill just to kill" at that point he taught me of the value of life of all creatures big and small.:O
:iconambicubus:
looks fucking great! :D

Oooh I love the deeper oranges to reds on this one - is that because it's shadowy or is it actually darker than a monarch?
