most specifically, an American Kestrel ( Falco sparverius)
America's smallest falcon and a beautiful bird of prey. It is also known as a Sparrow Hawk. You often see them perched along wires on country roads where they hunt insects and mice when insects are not to be had. This one is male, and he is perched on the gloved hand of a guide, in a stucco doorway at the Arizona-Sonoma Desert Museum. The black stripes in the back is the branching of a tree, i think it rather accents the 3 black markings and draws you down into his face . . .
