Eastern Box Turtle by littleredelf Eastern Box Turtle by littleredelf
Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina)

i found this guy wandering in the middle of the road
and dropped him off in a safe place with high grasses

you have to respect a creature that carries its house on its back -
a lesson we could all learn from . . . wherever you go - there you are.

FUN FACTS:

:bulletred: Eastern Box Turtles will stay in the same area, as long as they have everything they need (food, water, other turtles to mate with).
:bulletred: Eastern Box Turtles hibernate in the winter, usually under dead leaves or inside old stumps.
:bulletred: Females usually dig their nests on stormy evenings.
:bulletred: Box turtles are some of the only turtles which can completely close their shell, protecting them from predators.
:bulletred: Turtle populations are in danger in other states (including Maryland)
because of pesticides and people taking them out of the wild for pets.

I had one of these buggers sitting in my house for observation for a couple of days a few years ago... They've got a very distinctive shell pattern, don't they? Doesn't seem to be quite identical, but certainly obvious to anyone that's seen one before.

This is an excellent picture of this turtle species, by the way.

He's a pretty one! We found one with similar coloration yesterday, was too fond of the camera though.

While I'm always capable of missing important aspects, I imagine you'd agree that this is not the most purely artistic (in some senses, at least) of your photos. There is more to photography than art, though, and this is a fantastic photograph-- far more valuable, to me, than most overtly artistic efforts at DA. The turtle is gorgeous and magnificent, of course; but beyond that, the technical quality of this image is breathtaking. I've very rarely sensed such a stunning co-incidence of vivid colors, patterns, and sheerly magnetic focus. I'm quite serious. Thus it is, in terms of pure visual content, extraordinary art-- and that's a stellar achievement. Thanks very much for sharing. :)

:aww: what a BEAUTIFUL comment
and such flattery! :blushes:

:thanks: thank you for taking the time
to tell me what you like most about
a photo that honestly, i took if only
to share with other people, a creature
most overlook and might accidentally
hit when speeding down the road.

"and such flattery!" I dunno, after my other comment this tortoise is probably feeling a bit forsaken! But I am glad you find the beauty and magic in nature. :)
